What is telepharmacy?
Telepharmacy is defined as the delivery
of pharmaceutical care via telecommunications to patients at a
distance, or in areas where they may not have direct contact with or
access to a pharmacist.
Think of a telepharmacy as an extension of our pharmacy closer to you. Telepharmacy can be used to provide better access to the expertise of a pharmacist, and in turn, a pharmacy location closer to you.
How does telepharmacy work?
A retail telepharmacy is a licensed brick-and-mortar pharmacy staffed by a Certified Pharmacy Technician. Prescriptions are prepared by the Certified Pharmacy Technician, then each prescription is reviewed by the managing pharmacist located at another pharmacy.
Telepharmacies operate in the exact same manner as traditional pharmacies, except the final medication verification and patient counseling are provided by the off-site pharmacist. If you wish to receive counseling, the pharmacist is always available through a HIPAA-compliant live-video system. Imagine the traditional pharmacy as the hub and the telepharmacy as a convenient location that offers you, the patient, better access to pharmacy care services.

Is telepharmacy safe and secure?
Telepharmacy is a safe practice of pharmacy, and advances in modern technology allow remote-dispensing software to ensure the highest level of safety and security for patients, pharmacists and technicians. In a study performed as part of the North Dakota Telepharmacy Project, remote-dispensing sites, or telepharmacies, reported a lower overall medication dispensing error rate than standard, traditional pharmacies.
TelePharm, the telepharmacy software used within our pharmacies, stores all data inside of secure, HIPAA-compliant servers. Their team maintains a closed and encrypted system, ensuring that they meet all the requirements of HIPAA compliance. They also use 256-bit SSL encryption, the industry standard for protecting patient health information.
